@lifeofencourgement: Not every field inspection company hires 1099 independent contractors. Some companies hire inspectors as W-2 employees and pay an hourly rate. Here’s the difference: With a W-2 field inspection position, you are an employee of that company. You may have a set schedule, assigned territory, required hours, company policies, training requirements, and a supervisor. You generally cannot subcontract your assignments to another inspector. Example: A company hires you for $22/hour as a W-2 Field Inspector, Monday–Friday. They determine when you’re expected to work, the territory you cover, and how assignments must be completed. Compare that to a 1099 independent contractor opportunity, where you’re operating as your own business. You may be able to accept or decline assignments, contract with multiple companies, build your own schedule, negotiate certain fees, and structure your workload around other income streams—subject to each contract’s requirements. Neither is automatically better. W-2 = more structure. 1099 = potentially more flexibility and business control. If your goal is to build a flexible field inspection business, read the job description carefully before applying. Look for terms like employee, hourly, W-2, independent contractor, and 1099. Don’t just look at the pay. Know what you’re signing up for. I work for this company and while yes you are technically an employee, you manage your own schedule and they are amazing to work for. You have an hourly rate and then they also pay you an hourly rate for drive time plus they pay you 72 cents per mile for drive time in addition to the hourly rate and this includes being paid for your drive time back to your office or home upon completion. I work CSI in addition to my 1099 jobs and CSI is literally one of the best out there.
