Miu had never felt like she belonged in Lena's world but she had become very good at pretending she did. She knew which fork to use at dinners that seemed to require six of them. She knew not to stare when someone casually mentioned spending more on a weekend away than Miu earned in a whole year. She had learned how to smile through conversations about investments, properties and family businesses she knew nothing about. Tonight, Miu stood beneath enormous chandeliers in the ballroom of one of Bangkok's most expensive hotels, holding a glass of champagne she didn't particularly like. Across the room, Lena was talking to her father. She looked beautiful. She always did at events like this. Her black dress fell perfectly against her body. To everyone in this room, Lena was the daughter of one of Thailand's wealthiest businessmen. To Miu, she was the woman who snored when she was exhausted…the woman who stole Miu's chips and then denied it while still chewing…the woman who appeared at Miu's apartment after midnight because she'd had a bad day and wanted to be held. Her girlfriend of two years. Secretly. “She's beautiful, isn't she?” Miu looked towards Lena's mother who arrived beside her. “That she is.” Miu smiled Lena's mother glanced at her fondly. “I'm glad she brought you tonight. She works too much. She needs friends around her.” Friends. Miu had heard that word so many times that she'd stopped reacting to it. “She asked me a few weeks ago.” Miu said. Her mother patted Miu’s arm. “She adores you.” Miu looked across the room and Lena chose that moment to glance towards her. Their eyes met and Lena smiled. A real smile. Not the polite one she'd been giving everyone else. Nobody around them knew what that smile meant. Nobody knew Lena had woken in Miu's bed that morning. Nobody knew they'd spent twenty minutes kissing in the kitchen before Lena reluctantly left to get ready. Nobody knew Lena had whispered I love you against Miu's lips before walking out the door. Miu sometimes wondered how long they could keep doing this. Every time she asked, Lena had the same answer. Not forever. Miu believed her…she always did. A glass chimed somewhere near the front of the ballroom and the conversations slowly faded as Lena's father stepped onto the small stage. “Can I have everyone's attention for a moment?” Miu watched Lena's father begin thanking everyone for attending. Something about a new partnership. Miu wasn't really listening. Then she heard Lena's name and her attention snapped back. “…and this partnership represents more than simply business.

Something about a new partnership. Miu wasn't really listening. Then she heard Lena's name and her attention snapped back. “…and this partnership represents more than simply business." People around Miu started smiling as she frowned. Across the room, Lena had gone completely still. Her father continued. “Our families have worked closely together for many years, and tonight it gives me enormous pleasure to announce that our relationship will soon become even closer.” Miu's stomach dropped. A young man stepped forward and Miu recognised him. His family owned half a dozen companies. She'd met him twice at events like this. He moved beside Lena and that’s when Lena finally looked towards Miu. There was panic in her eyes but no surprise at the words. Miu stopped breathing. “Lena and Anan became engaged earlier this week.” Applause exploded through the ballroom but Miu heard none of it. Everything seemed to disappear beneath a strange ringing in her ears as she stared at Lena. Engaged. Lena was engaged. Someone hugged Lena but she barely reacted. Her eyes remained fixed on Miu. Lena's mother gasped happily beside her. “What wonderful news.” Miu turned towards her. She was smiling…everyone was smiling. “Did you know?” Someone asked Miu. Miu opened her mouth but nothing came out. Lena's mother laughed. “Of course she did. These two tell each other everything.” Miu looked at Lena again and she gave the smallest nod. A sad little acknowledgement from across the room and Lena’s face crumpled. CONTINUATION IN COMMENTS ⬇️ #lenamiu #ThaiGL #wlw
