@chinabymonica: What if the next alternative to plastic isn’t another petroleum-based material? It’s bamboo. In Fujian, China, a company called Yangzhu Technology is turning bamboo waste into a material that can be used for packaging and other industrial products. The hard part is this: bamboo powder doesn’t naturally mix well with polymers. So the company developed technologies to grind bamboo into extremely fine particles, sort them dynamically with lasers, and modify the material so the two can work together. Its shipping boxes can now contain 60 to 70 percent bamboo powder. And this isn’t a tiny experiment. Sanming City alone has about 310,000 hectares — of bamboo forest. A new industrial park is designed to eventually produce up to 2 million tons of bamboo-based biodegradable materials and products a year. China became an EV powerhouse partly by taking something expensive and scaling it through manufacturing. Now another industry is asking the same question: Can we do that with materials? This time, the raw material grows back. I personally guide China tech tours of top robotics and AI companies. Interested?
