Christmas haul for our 13 y/o daughter that didn’t quite go as planned — Thank you @ColourPop Cosmetics for the cute goodies!
Every record Ancestry sells was already free. Birth certificates, census returns, parish registers, ships' manifests. All of it sat in courthouses and county archives, public, and anyone could go and look at it. That was true before Ancestry existed and it is true now. The only thing standing between those records and a searchable website was somebody willing to spend twenty years typing them in. Allen bought a dying genealogy magazine in 1997 for the archive that came with it rather than the brand, put it online, and then just kept going. More records, more counties, more countries, year after year. That is the whole moat. A competitor starting today does not need a better idea, because the idea is obvious. They need twenty years. Ancestry now holds 24 billion records and has sold 18 million DNA kits. In 2020 Blackstone bought it for $4.7 billion. Follow @theventure for the greatest founder stories ever told!
