lawyer here. you only need to understand them if you are going to waive them.
not understanding your rights is the equivalent of invoking your rights. so saying "I don't understand" is basically the same as saying "I'm exercising my right to remain silent." so if they get anything out of you after you said you don't understand your rights would likely be inadmissible.

People have very little understanding of how the law works (which is ironic on this one right?). They'll simply arrest you. As long as they don't VIOLATE the rights, you pretending you don't understand them has absolutely no impact on procedures.

I’d like to hear it from Miranda herself. I heard she’s always right.

Adrian Martinez :
Your Miranda rights are more so they can question you, if you don’t understand your rights they can still arrest you they would most likely just wait till you have legal counsel to speak to you.

Damian Neve :
"understand" pretty much equals "stand under the premise of contract" in legalese so that's actually the default strat. always say no.

It’s the same as if you declined to speak to them IF you understand your rights. They will proceed with what evidence they have against you, which btw, if they reading you your rights they generally have enough probable cause to charge you. They just want you to incriminate yourself further.

It’s not an option. You still go to jail they just don’t question you. Miranda rights have nothing to do with being arrested. They only read them to you for questioning/interrogation. You’re still going to Jain and going in front of a judge for arraignment.

All they have to do is read them to you. They don't have to make sure you understand them

Nick Wiethop :
Your rights only have to be read to you if your detained and being asked questions. Just cause you’re being arrested you don’t have to read rights.
