The Story Behind Tupac's "Dear Mama" 🕊 Tupac had been referencing his mother in his music for years before 'Dear Mama' ever existed as a song. Producer Tony Pizarro had noticed that Pac kept weaving lines about his mother into other records and Pizarro kept telling him those feelings deserved their own song. One day Tupac finally came in and told him he was ready. He asked Pizarro if he had "In All My Wildest Dreams" by Joe Sample. Tupac said he knew exactly what to do with it. Pizarro got the track ready, Tupac stepped up to the mic and laid the whole thing in one session. The song is built around two samples Joe Sample's "In All My Wildest Dreams" and The Spinners' "Sadie". Tony Pizarro handled production with co-production from Moses and DF Master Tee. What makes the song so powerful is how honest it is. He talked directly about his mother Afeni Shakur's crack addiction, their years of poverty, the absence of a father figure and the estrangement that had grown between them before circling back to love and gratitude. It was a full reckoning with a complicated relationship between a mother and a son who both went through more than most people ever will. Tupac was in prison serving his sentence when the music video was shot. Afeni appeared in the video herself re-enacting moments from their relationship alongside a Tupac lookalike. Seeing her in a video made entirely as a gift to her, while her son sat in a cell, added an extra layer of weight to the record. 'Dear Mama' topped the Billboard Hot Rap Singles chart for five weeks, peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified platinum in July 1995. In 2023 the Library of Congress added it to the National Recording Registry one of only a handful of rap records ever selected.
