Government Extends Fuel Tax Relief By Cindy Mulomba Government has extended the temporary suspension of excise duty on petrol and diesel, along with the zero-rating of Value Added Tax –VAT- on the two fuel products, for another 90 days. The measure is intended to cushion citizens and businesses against high fuel costs. The extension takes effect from July 1 to September 30, 2026, through Statutory Instrument No. 56 of 2026 under the Customs and Excise Act and Statutory Instrument No. 61 of 2026 under the Value Added Tax Act. Speaking during a media briefing in Lusaka, Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary THABO KAWANA said the continued tax relief is intended to help stabilise pump prices and lessen the impact of the ongoing crisis in the Middle East, which continues to put pressure on global oil prices and fuel supply chains. Mr. KAWANA said the intervention reflects Government's efforts to protect livelihoods, support economic activity, and maintain macroeconomic stability and energy security. He said Government will continue implementing targeted measures to safeguard the welfare of citizens while supporting sustained economic resilience.
