🏠 HE BUILT 96 TINY HOMES—BUT WHAT HE REALLY WANTED TO REBUILD WAS PEOPLE’S HOPE ❤️ Imagine having no door to lock at night. No kitchen where you can prepare your own meal. No permanent bed waiting for you. No little space where you can finally put down your belongings and whisper, “This is mine. I’m home.” In Fredericton, New Brunswick, entrepreneur Marcel LeBrun saw people experiencing homelessness and became convinced that temporary relief alone wasn’t enough. Beginning around 2015, LeBrun turned his attention toward poverty reduction and affordable housing. He traveled across North America studying different approaches and spent time in low-income communities asking people what they actually needed. His research eventually helped inspire 12 Neighbours—a community built around permanent housing, personal development and employment. (Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation) And the homes may be tiny, but what comes with them is significant. The project grew to 96 detached micro-homes, each about 200 square feet, with its own kitchen, bathroom, living and sleeping space, covered deck and small private yard. Federal and provincial governments announced more than $13.3 million in combined funding for the project’s second phase in 2023. (Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation) But Marcel didn’t want to simply hand someone a key and walk away. 12 Neighbours was designed around three ideas: permanent housing, personal development and progressive employment. Employment and training opportunities have been developed through initiatives including construction, retail and the community’s Print Lab. (Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation) Perhaps no story explains its impact better than that of resident Al Smith. Before 12 Neighbours, Al and his fiancée Chanda had been living in a tent in the woods outside Fredericton. After moving into the community, Al gained not only a permanent home but also a job at the Print Lab, eventually becoming known as the community’s “mayor.” (Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation) At first, the couple reportedly hesitated even to hang pictures on their walls because they feared their new stability might somehow disappear. Eventually, those walls began to feel like home. ❤️ And the vision has continued growing. By August 2025, 12 Neighbours reported that all 96 homes were completed and that more than 90 people were living there with permanent housing and community support. (12N 2026) A tiny house cannot erase every hardship a person has endured. But sometimes rebuilding begins with something incredibly simple: A key. A bed. A safe place. And a door you know will still be yours tomorrow. 🏠❤️ 👉 Would you like to see communities like this built in more cities?
