Yes. White people do this as well to hide black ancestry. More often than not, those “native” great grandparents were actually just mulatto.

This still doesn’t say anything to me.. I still wholeheartedly believe black people were the indigenous people of this land and many others. Comparing our DNA next to Siberians is crazy.. And no one is scared of being African, but in that same token then WE ALL are African by ancestry.

Same with my family. We were told we were Nottaway, Black Foot and of course Cherokee Native American only for me to do my 23 and me and find out I’m 66% African 24% European 8% Lebanese and like 1% Asian… not a trace of NA blood there… my grandmother always had stories about how our ancestors lived on reservations in Virginia blah blah blah… 😑

I think many Black Americans have overestimated our Native American ancestry, while underestimating our European ancestry. I don’t see this entirely as an attempt to distance ourselves from Africa, but rather, in part, from Europe.
