A High Level for a Higher Education First you notice. Then you wonder. Then you know. And the more you wonder, the more you know. That is education. Not the accumulation of answers. Not the memorization of somebody else’s certainty. Not filling an empty vessel with facts until it can pass an examination. Education begins with NOTICE. Hmmm. That’s interesting. Something doesn’t quite fit. A pattern appears. A contradiction whispers. A question knocks at the door. Then comes WONDER. Why? Why not? What if? Who says? How do we know? And what happens if we look at the same thing from the other side? That is where the POETIC meets the NOETIC. The poetic imagines. The noetic knows. One sees the metaphor. The other recognizes the meaning. One reaches beyond what is already visible. The other says: Ah. There you are. Higher Education should cultivate both. Because knowledge without imagination becomes repetition. Imagination without knowledge becomes fantasy. But when the two meet— something awakens. Not obedience. Not conformity. Consciousness. The learner stops asking: What am I supposed to know? And begins asking: What am I noticing? That question changes everything. Because curiosity is not a weakness in knowledge. It is the doorway to it. ⸻ CUT TO: FEBRUARY 7, 1962 Pearl and Perry are frantically searching for their missing daughter. Pearl is worried. Perry, considerably less so. PERRY: Damn it, woman, calm down. You know that damn child. She’ll be off somewhere daydreaming— or sitting in the backyard studying the stars. And eventually, they find her. Little Tracy. Lost in thought. Perfectly content. Completely unaware that anybody has been looking for her. Naturally, the adults want an explanation. Where were you? What were you doing? And Tracy answers: I was just wondering… what my baby sister will be. A boy or a girl? There it is. Before the Ph.D. Before the research. Before Higher Education. Before anybody taught her what questions she was supposed to ask— she was already doing it. Noticing. Wondering. Trying to know something she could not possibly know yet. First you notice. Then you wonder. Then you know. The more you wonder, the more you know. The more you know, the more there is to wonder about. Some children apparently need to be taught curiosity. Others have to be retrieved from the backyard because of it. And suddenly education is no longer a staircase somebody else built. It is a landscape. A frontier. A playground for the mind. So come on in. COME TO CANADA. THE LAND OF WONDER ’N AWE. No intellectual border guards. No passport stamped APPROVED THOUGHTS ONLY. Just bring your curiosity. Because here— Curiosity is the passport. And wonder? Wonder is how we find our way home. ⸻ FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES Just Tracy, Just ’Cause. Parsimony. Clarity. Virtue. © 2026 Tracy Peressini.
