@chybike.unmoved: Niccolò Machiavelli (1469–1527) saw morality in leadership very differently from how most people are taught to see it. He questioned why society calls a ruler "manipulative" for protecting his people through deception, while praising a ruler who stays honest and loses everything, including the people depending on him. Machiavelli argued that conventional morality often assumes good intentions are enough. In The Prince, he explored the difference between how men actually live and how we're told they should live, and why leaders who only follow the second get destroyed by those who don't. The effective leader says: "I will do what preserves my people, even if history calls it dishonest." The idealist instead says: "Honesty is virtue. Deception is corruption. My hands must stay clean, even if my people don't survive because of it." But Machiavelli was NOT simply saying "ruthless leaders are good and honest leaders are weak." His argument was more precise. He was asking us to examine what we actually want from power, results, or the appearance of virtue. To Machiavelli, the dangerous question isn't, "Was this action honest?" The deeper question is: "DID IT ACTUALLY PROTECT THE PEOPLE WHO DEPENDED ON IT?" Morality in leadership, in Machiavelli's philosophy, deserves scrutiny rather than blind praise. Question the leaders you admire. Examine what "good" actually cost them.
