VEE🧸💙 :
I understand why people say IV therapy is a scam, especially because of how it’s sometimes marketed. Personally, whenever I used to hear ‘IV therapy,’ I also assumed it was basically normal saline with some B-complex vitamins being given through a vein, without any proper assessment of whether the person actually needed it.
But after doing more research and learning more about IV therapy, I realized that it’s not that simple. IV therapy is an established medical route for administering fluids, medications, electrolytes and certain nutrients when there is an appropriate indication. It isn’t limited to normal saline and B-complex.
Take something like the Myers’ Cocktail, for example. It’s traditionally a combination of several vitamins and minerals rather than simply saline and B-complex. But and this is very important, you shouldn’t just give an IV infusion to anybody because they asked for one. There should be an appropriate assessment, consideration of the person’s symptoms, medical history, medications, allergies, hydration status and, where appropriate, laboratory investigations before deciding what treatment is actually indicated.
At the same time, I think we need to be careful with the word ‘detox.’ Saying that an IV is going to ‘flush toxins out of your system’ or ‘detox your body’ is misleading. Your liver and kidneys already have major roles in processing and eliminating waste. So I completely understand the criticism when IV therapy is marketed that way.
But saying ‘IV therapy is a scam because your body naturally detoxifies itself’ is also an oversimplification. The fact that the body has its own systems doesn’t make IV administration itself fraudulent. IV therapy has legitimate medical uses; the real question is whether a particular person actually needs a particular IV treatment and whether there’s evidence supporting the claimed benefit.
So, as healthcare professionals, I think the focus should be on proper assessment, appropriate indication, evidence based treatment and patient safety not simply putting an IV in someone and calling it a detox.
