Chapter 23 — Give Her My Light The hospital was unusually quiet that morning. Engfa sat alone in a private room. She wore a hospital gown. Her hands were cold. Her mother sat beside her, holding them tightly. “Are you still certain?” Engfa nodded. “Yes.” Her mother fought back tears. “You don't have to do this.” “I know.” “You can change your mind.” “I know.” Engfa looked at her mother. “But I don't want to.” Her father stood near the window. He hadn't spoken much that morning. Finally, he turned around. “You're our daughter.” Engfa smiled sadly. “I know, Dad.” “We don't want to lose the life you have.” Engfa looked down. “Neither do I.” “Then why?” Engfa's eyes filled with tears. “Because Charlotte is my life too.” Silence filled the room. Her father closed his eyes. He understood. A doctor entered. “Engfa, we're ready.” She nodded. Before leaving the room, she looked at her parents. “Promise me something.” Her mother immediately answered. “What?” “If anything happens…” Her voice trembled. “Don't tell Charlotte.” Her mother cried. “Engfa…” “Please.” Her father nodded slowly. “We promise.” Engfa smiled. “Thank you.” Meanwhile, Charlotte was being prepared in another room. She still didn't know who her donor was. Her doctor had simply told her that a suitable donor had been found. Charlotte was nervous. “Will it work?” The nurse smiled. “We're going to do everything we can.” Charlotte swallowed. “I just want to see again.” The doctor nodded. “We understand.” Charlotte reached for the nurse's hand. “Someone gave me this chance.” “Yes.” “I hope I can thank them someday.” The nurse smiled. “I hope so too.” Charlotte closed her eyes. She didn't know that the person who had given her that chance was lying only a few rooms away. Engfa was wheeled toward the operating room. She stared at the ceiling. Her heart was pounding. For the first time, fear began to overwhelm her. Not fear of losing her sight. Fear of what would happen afterward. Would Charlotte look for her? Would she understand? Would she forgive her? Engfa closed her eyes. “Please…” She whispered. “Let her see.” The operating room doors opened. Before the doctors began, Engfa looked at the ceiling one last time. She imagined Charlotte's smile. Her laugh. The way she used to look at sunsets. The way she would stare at fashion magazines. The way her eyes lit up whenever she talked about her dreams. Engfa smiled. “Take mine.” A tear slipped from the corner of her eye. “And give them to her.” In another operating room, Charlotte was prepared for surgery. The anesthesia began taking effect. Her last thought before falling asleep was Engfa. I hope she's waiting for me when I wake up. The surgeries began. Hours passed. Charlotte's family waited outside. Engfa's parents waited in another hallway. Neither family spoke much. They could only wait. Finally, a doctor stepped out. Charlotte's mother immediately stood. “How is my daughter?” The doctor smiled. “The procedure went well.” She covered her mouth and cried. “Thank God.” Across the hospital, another doctor gave Engfa's parents the same news. “The procedure was successful.” Engfa's mother immediately broke down in tears. Her husband held her tightly. “She did it.” Several hours later, Charlotte slowly regained consciousness. Everything was still dark. She panicked. “Doctor?” The nurse immediately came closer. “Charlotte, you're awake.” “My eyes…” “It's normal to have your eyes covered right now.” “Will I see?” The nurse smiled. “You need time to heal.” Charlotte took a shaky breath. “Where's Engfa?” The nurse looked toward the door. “She'll be here.” Charlotte relaxed slightly. She didn't know that Engfa was already recovering in another room. And she didn't know that when she finally opened her eyes again… the world she would see would be through the gift of the woman she loved. But by then… Engfa would already be gone. ❤️
