In 1902, at about 26 years old, he led a small force back to Riyadh and captured the city, famously taking control of its Masmak fortress. Over the following decades, he fought and negotiated with various tribes and regional rulers, gradually expanding his control across much of the Arabian Peninsula. In 1925, his forces captured Mecca, followed by Medina and Jeddah, bringing the Hejaz under his rule. In 1932, he united his major territories and proclaimed the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, becoming its first king. Oil was discovered commercially in 1938, transforming the kingdom's future, although large-scale oil wealth developed later. He ruled until his death in 1953.
