White guy here. I once had a colleague (another white guy) lower his voice to a conspiratorial whisper and make a racist comment to me. I was so angry, I repeated his comment loudly to the room and asked what he could possibly be thinking. He began desperately trying to shush me and apologizing and saying could we discuss it later. My question to him was, if you thought what you said was right, why lower your voice to say it? And why shush me when I called attention to it? As I teach my students, your true character is who you are when you think no one is looking.

flying back from St. Lucia I sat next to a large native of St Lucia. I'm not exactly small myself. It was her first time away from home. We became friends by the time we landed in Canada 🇨🇦 It was cold with snow and that poor girl only had summer clothes. Moral of the story: get off your high horse and make friends. We ALL belong here 😏
