This one mannequin in India removes 100 t-shirts worth of textile waste from landfill! And it could help replace thousands of plastic mannequins used in stores every year. The idea of Jothi Papers started with Mani and Amutha back in 1996, after they saw how much fabric was being wasted at textile factories across India. So they developed a way to turn this textile waste into recycled cotton paper, and came up with a way to make mannequins! Here’s how it works. Leftover cotton scraps from making clothes, mats and more, get shredded into a pulp. This pulp goes through a 30-step process, is mixed with a natural biodegradable glue, shaped in molds, and air-dried for two to three days. Even the paint is made from stone dust and water. And when the mannequin is no longer needed it can be buried in soil and biodegrades in a couple of months. This may look a little bit suspicious if you try it at home so just tell your neighbours before you do it. Today their venture make 20,000 mannequins annually for 500 outlets across India. India is in the top three countries in the world for textile waste generation, generating 8.5% of global textile waste. So solutions like this can help creater cleaner cities, whilst reducing water and air pollution too!
