@soul.rebel24: Reggae’s Journey in Britain If Jamaica gave reggae its heartbeat, Britain gave it a global stage. During the 1950s and 1960s, Caribbean men and women arrived in Britain carrying their culture, their music and their traditions with them, ska, rocksteady and, later, reggae. But mainstream radio wasn’t exactly rushing to embrace these sounds. Then came the pirate radio stations. Stations such as Radio Caroline, broadcasting from offshore in the North Sea, began playing music that wasn’t getting much attention on mainstream British radio. DJs such as Tony Blackburn were part of that changing broadcasting landscape. At first, Blackburn was reportedly not convinced about reggae, but as ska, rocksteady and reggae records became increasingly popular with British audiences, the music became impossible to ignore. Records such as Desmond Dekker and the Aces’ Israelites, Bob and Marcia’s Young, Gifted and Black, and Nicky Thomas’s Have a Little Faith were making serious waves in the music circuit. Reggae was finding an audience “and Britain was listening. Meanwhile, Caribbean communities were building lives and communities of their own. Despite the challenges and discrimination they faced, they created vibrant neighbourhoods through music, fashion, food, entrepreneurship and community spirit. Places such as Brixton became synonymous with Jamaican culture, while other Caribbean communities established themselves across areas of London, including Kilburn, Harlesden and Ladbroke Grove. Sound systems and community gatherings became much more than entertainment. They were meeting places, cultural spaces and lifelines. They gave people a sense of identity, belonging and self-worth while helping to carry Caribbean music into the wider British culture. By the late 1970s, reggae had well and truly broken through. One of the memorable moments came in 1979, when Errol Dunkley’s OK Fred reached number 11 on the UK Singles Chart. The song, with its unmistakably Jamaican character and playful story of an uptown girl attracted to a free-spirited downtown character, showed just how far reggae had travelled. And then there’s that unforgettable “Yaga Yaga” — a little piece of Jamaican flavour that helped give the record its character. OK Fred wasn’t simply a reggae record doing well in Britain. It was another sign that reggae had moved beyond the Caribbean community and had become part of the wider British musical landscape. From pirate radio to sound systems, from community halls to the charts, reggae had fought its way into the British mainstream. And just as one chapter was developing, another was beginning. A new generation of British artists was creating a softer, more romantic sound, a sound that would become known around the world as Lovers Rock. #ReggaeMusic #ErrolDunkley #ReggaeHistory #BritishReggae #BlackBritishHistory

How different things are now! We didn’t leave the house unless we looked the best we could. Not a bonnet and fluffy slippers or trousers halfway down backside in sight! But fashion moves on I suppose.
