He was known for his intricate, artistic compositions that often reflected the social and political atmosphere of the colonial and post-colonial eras. Kanonge played a crucial role in shaping the career of Daniel Owino Misiani (D.O. Misiani), the leader of the famous Shirati Jazz Band. One of his most celebrated compositions is "Kanonge Hapana", which is regarded as one of the finest pieces of Benga artistry. Other notable works associated with him include the album "Dr. Abuya Olendo" (1976). His songs often explored the complexities of life, including warnings about the pitfalls of fame, money, and lifestyle choices, as highlighted in "Kanonge Hapana" where he warns of wasting money on alcohol and, implicitly, the downsides of a reckless life. Distinction from "Odira Pombe Kali": While Odira Kanonge is the artist behind "Kanonge Hapana," some archival discussions mention another artist, Dalmas Orore, known as Odira Pombe Kali, who also played rhythm guitar for D.O. Misiani's Shirati Jazz
