I graduated last year and let me give you the advice I wish someone had told me. Those first few weeks are going to be thrilling and terrifying at the same time. You’ll experience the excitement of meeting new people and having independence at the same time you’re feeling lonely and like everyone else already has their people. I promise you 95% of the “friend groups” you see now are going to fizzle out by the end of the first semester. I spent my entire freshman year looking at other people and comparing my experience and relationships to what I thought they were experiencing, but I talked to people after graduation who I thought were living the dream freshman year and they told me they were miserable. Social media is fake and a highlight reel so don’t believe what you see online. I didn’t feel like I’d found my place until my junior year, and suddenly I felt more joy and belonging than I ever imagined, and I noticed a lot of my best friends were people who had stuck by me when I thought I was alone. Your experience is your experience, there’s no “college experience” that’s just what people like to say to romanticize four years of deep growth and stretching beyond your comfort zone. And finally the biggest lie I believed that kept me from living presently was the idea that I was the only one struggling and that it made me wrong. Everyone and I mean EVERYONE struggled in college, but only some people acknowledged it and grew from it. Believe me, everything happens for a reason, and these years aren’t going to be 100% sunshine and rainbows, but those moments are absolutely going to be there and you can cherish them while recognizing that the reality is a bit more uncomfortable
