Hey Athena, Doctor Jeff here. Candida normally lives in the vagina in small amounts and usually causes no problem. A yeast infection happens when that normal balance gets disrupted and Candida overgrows. Common triggers include antibiotics, hormonal changes, pregnancy, diabetes or high blood sugar, and a weakened immune system. Eating processed sugar by itself is not considered a direct cause of vaginal Candida, although persistently high blood sugar—especially with poorly controlled diabetes—can make yeast infections more likely. Also, if you get it in your mouth, it’s called oral thrush.
