@askpaindoc: Some compliments sound supportive until you have to hear them over and over again. When someone has been living with chronic pain for years, people often notice everything they continue to do. They keep working, take care of their families, make it to appointments, and keep showing up even on days when doing so takes everything they have. From the outside, that resilience can look inspiring. So people say something meant entirely as a compliment. But after a while, those words can start to carry a different weight. Because being recognized for how well you carry something can sometimes make it harder to admit just how heavy it has become. The compliment? “You’re so strong.” Sometimes strength is real. But so is exhaustion. So is needing help. So is wanting someone to see the struggle instead of only how well you’re surviving it. You can be incredibly strong and still be tired of having to be strong. #chronicpain #chronicillness #spoonie #patientadvocacy #invisibleillness
"You're so strong, you're resilient, you're tough" Sometimes these feel like a slap in the face.

Being “strong” comes with a price and it’s a very, very high one.

I also think it can seem like they see how much you are struggling to push through and rather than encourage rest, they compliment it as strength. It makes it feel like failure when pushing through no longer works.

I opened up to a friend recently and she said, “you’re stronger than you think.” Girl, I know I’m strong, I’ve been doing this for 3 years on my own, I’m f@#%ig exhausted

My family tells me all you’re too young to have this and my other favorite is you need to get off of your medication and try a more holistic approach. When I tried everything in my power and nothing’s worked.

I hate that compliment. I just want someone to see me. I want them to see how hard it really is. My families favorite compliment is “You’re so strong and God only gives you what you can handle” I wish God didn’t have such a faith in me.

I talked with palliative about my case cause it's a serious situation. Nutrition causes me severe pain outside of having Gastroparesis and none of my other disabilities POTS, Issac Syndrome, Small Fiber Neuropathy, None Epileptic Episodes, post TBI etc. can't be regulated at all. And no health care professional can help me anymore. I've had comments "at least you look good even though you might be feeling bad". Invisible illness is hard to navigate.
