@mattintheclassroom: Replying to @Firy 🌸 I’m not a housing policy expert but this did help me slightly—I hope it does for you too. #costofliving #halifaxrent #negotiation

You ask, and the realtor or landlord says no.

People need to learn about REITs and ask the government to push back and put in policy.

Thanks Matt! I know that I'll be a good decent tenant which is hard to find these days. I'll certainly negotiate too hopefully this can help me moving forward. I'll just keep my fingers crossed and hopefully all will work out! 🙏😊

To be honest, I am recognizing how opposed I have been to negotiating in different areas of life. “Most people don’t ask for what they want.” Resonated oddly better than most advice I’ve received.

Ugh I feel like the opposite is true! Looking for apts a few months ago I had a few go before I could even schedule a viewing. There are SO many people looking and (most) landlords don’t give a sh, once you’re gone they’ll get someone else and on and on.

I feel like the conglomerate who owns most rentals in my area is happy to get new tenants in because they can up the rent astronomically every time.

Absolutely- ask for what you want! Worst case Ontario they say no. Who cares. Puts you in a position to decide what truly matters!

Me and my wife have negotiated this while we wait for her to finish school. We pay 1450 all in including power water etc. I’m an electrician and it’s a 4 unit so I just fix stuff for the landlord and in turn I get cheaper rent

One month of empty rent equals at least $100 reduction if you stay. Just saying lol.

The issue is, a lot of them want the apartment rented within one month and don't care about making your life hell

I could see them asking a high price to try and get tenants Ina. certain income bracket who may be able to more reliably pay rent. but be okay with a lower rent.
