Dow was selling bromine at 36c against the German cartel's fixed 49c. The cartel dumped it in America at 15c to kill him while holding around 40c in Europe. He had an agent buy hundreds of thousands of pounds at 15c, shipped it to Europe and sold it at 27c, including in Germany. They cut to 12c, then 10.5c. He kept buying. They settled in 1908. Look up Herbert Dow Bromkonvention.

The bromine story is less David kills Goliath and more David discovers that Goliath has a distribution network, buys Goliath’s discounted ammunition, ships it back to Goliath’s customers, and eventually negotiates a zoning agreement with him- because that part of the story the American leaves out 😉
