The Motherland Calls is a monumental statue standing on Mamayev Kurgan in Volgograd, Russia. Created by sculptor Yevgeny Vuchetich and unveiled in 1967, it commemorates the Soviet soldiers who fought and died during the Battle of Stalingrad in World War II. The statue depicts a powerful female figure representing the Motherland. She stands with one foot forward, her body leaning into the movement, as if calling her people to defend their homeland. In one raised hand she holds a long sword, while her other arm stretches forward in a commanding gesture, urging soldiers into battle. Standing approximately 85 meters (279 feet) tall including its sword, the monument was an extraordinary engineering achievement for its time. Its enormous scale gives the figure an almost overwhelming presence when viewed from below.
