I think this is not so diferent from an AI, the bird was shown some objects and words together and surely given a purpose to relate them (food if he says the word). But he doesnt know what the object really is (evidently), rather he just joins a bunch of inputs (visual, touch, smells…) with the word. AI is in a way pretty similar, gets inputs and processes them for an output (in this case not for food but rather minimal error from the training he got). And in reality, is not even so much different from us.
