@techniahqrobot: The opening ceremony of the 2026 World Humanoid Robot Games has turned Beijing’s National Speed Skating Oval, the “Ice Ribbon,” into one of the largest live demonstrations of humanoid robotics ever assembled. More than 1,000 humanoid robots are involved in the opening ceremony itself, with multiple teams coordinating large groups of machines inside the stadium. The performance is designed around synchronized robot movement, group control and collaborative perception, making the entrance of the “steel athletes” a technical demonstration as much as a ceremony. The theme of this year’s opening ceremony is “智竞向未来” — “Competing Intelligently Toward the Future.” The production combines robotics, sport, music, Chinese culture and large-scale human-machine performances. One of the most interesting elements is the Games’ “energy relay,” a robotic counterpart to an Olympic torch relay. The journey began around the Milan Winter Olympics, then moved through several real-world challenges across China. Humanoid robots performed precision tea picking in Fujian, paddled during a dragon boat event in Sichuan, and completed horseback archery near Sayram Lake in Xinjiang. The “energy” collected from these challenges is brought together at the opening ceremony to illuminate the “Zhixin” intelligent core, the symbolic flame of the World Humanoid Robot Games. The ceremony is also built around direct interaction between humans and machines. Humanoid robots are appearing alongside Olympic table-tennis champion Ding Ning, tennis star Zheng Jie, former Chinese football player Yang Chen, and young performers. The goal is to show robots collaborating, competing and performing with people rather than appearing only as isolated machines on a stage. And the scale behind tonight’s ceremony is even bigger. The second World Humanoid Robot Games brings together 2,056 robots from 666 teams representing 16 countries across six continents. China alone has 1,975 robots from 641 teams, including teams from 157 companies and 200 universities and research institutions. The Games run from August 22–26 in Beijing, with 51 events and 1,301 competition sessions. There are 30 competitive events and 21 scenario-based events, expanding far beyond running and football into martial arts, weightlifting, tug-of-war, table tennis, dance, industrial work, hotel services, home tasks, logistics, emergency response and dexterous-hand manipulation. That distinction matters. These machines are being tested on speed, balance and strength, but increasingly also on perception, manipulation, recovery, coordination and the ability to operate in environments built for humans. Several scenario competitions have moved toward realistic factories, homes, hotels and service environments rather than simplified demonstration arenas. The competition also starts immediately after the ceremony. Opening night includes a 7v7 humanoid football exhibition, followed by 400-meter and 100-meter preliminary races. Even the broadcast infrastructure reflects how seriously Beijing is treating the event. China Media Group deployed its 4K/8K ultra-high-definition broadcast trucks, previously used for major international sporting events, with three UHD production systems installed at the Ice Ribbon. The Games are being produced for five consecutive days using what organizers describe as Olympic-level broadcast standards. A year ago, humanoid robot competitions could still look like experimental engineering demos. Tonight, thousands of robots, hundreds of engineering teams, universities and robotics companies are sharing the same international sporting venue. The World Humanoid Robot Games 2026 are becoming something much more useful than a robot show: a public stress test for humanoid robotics, embodied AI, Physical AI, locomotion, dexterous manipulation, multi-robot coordination and real-world autonomy. Beijing has officially opened five days of robot competition. Now we get to see what these machines can actually do when the demo
