I'm 53, and I still parallel play, especially in social settings or larger groups. What kids are learning at daycare is community, empathy, and self expression

I think this is the reason why schools started at 3 yrs old. Nursery 1 at 3, Nurses 2 at 4, KG at 5 then Grade at 6.

I've seen a lot of kids who haven't played with other children. Zero social skills. No understanding of sharing. Unable to navigate social behaviour and cues. Intolerant to noise and easily overwhelmed. Day care a few times a week without question.

Im a psychologist and a mom. I am tired of trying to explain exactly this to everyone that says "daycare will be good for her, she'll make friends" she's 9 months old. She needs to be with me. We'll se when she's 3 y/oz

My two-year-old has become so socialized and is developing at the speed of light, thanks in part to daycare. I guess we have to do what’s in the best interest of each child, and I think that’s subjective to each individual child.

my 2 year old has been going to nursery for a year now. The pattern ive noticed is all the kids that go to nursery are very well socialised, the ones that don't, start crying as soon as a stranger says hello to them.

Not true. I’m an early childhood teacher (yes, I have a degree) & today I saw two children under the age of two PLAYING with one another. In that moment in time, the two of them were all they needed

I learned this in child development. They talk about parallel play and then cooperative then associate play but they can’t pay mothers to sahm with their children so this can be archived. Some mothers have to return to work at 6 weeks and some mothers have to chose between their job or staying home because their child is sick

I agree but this feels just like rubbing it in our faces. We all know the economy isn't built for a single income.

Y’all are mad at the person pointing out the benefits of a parent being home with their baby, instead of being mad at the system that makes that choice financially impossible for so many families. You’re mad at the wrong person. Be mad at a system that forces parents back to work before they’re ready, instead of getting mad at people for calling attention to it. We should be fighting for policies that actually give parents the choice to stay home if they want to.

This woman is speaking from privilege. Who can stay at home to raise their kids nowadays. This country is by and large a two income household.

I’m a psychologist as well, and it’s not that black and white. Children under the age of three do not necessarily need a lot of contact with other children for healthy development, parents and regular caregivers are the most important. However, this does not mean that contact with other children is unhealthy or unnecessary. Interaction with peers can contribute to social skills, language development, imitation, learning to play together, and becoming familiar with other people and situations. Good, warm, and stable childcare is therefore not automatically harmful, but the quality and amount of childcare can make a difference. In short, childcare is not essential for socialisation, but contact with other children can certainly be healthy and beneficial. This is what the current scientific evidence suggests.
