I do this brain exercise every day to improve my memory - backed by cognitive science. Researchers studying working memory training found that tasks which require not just remembering information but actively manipulating it, lead to stronger memory improvements. In these experiments participants completed mental tasks that challenged their working memory capacity- either by repeating information in the same order or by holding and reversing it (e.g., recalling numbers backwards). Both types of training improved memory compared to no training at all. But the backward manipulation based task produced and additional benefit: they trained to maintain and hold information while filtering distractions, a core function of working memory. In other words, the brain wasn’t just storing information, it was actively updating and coordinating multiple items at once. This matters because working memory underlies everyday skills like concentration, learning, problem-solving and remembering instructions. When you challenge it deliberately, you strengthen the neural systems responsible for attention control, cognitive flexibility and executive function. A simple way to apply this in daily life is a dual task working memory exercise: count backwards from 50 while simultaneously counting up from 1. It might feel difficult but that’s exactly the point. The difficulty signals that your working memory is being engaged and trained. Over time, this kind of effortless mental manipulation can make holding and using information in real life easier. This is why memory improves not just through passive repetition alone but through active cognitive load and targeted working memory (brain) training. My name is Franzi, I studied psychology and explain the science of wellbeing and behavioural change ✨ follow for more tips on how to rewire your brain 🧠 #brainexercise #memorytraining #improvememory #attention #mentalfitness
