the research is way behind cause patriarchy but I'd say personally and professionally as a reader and disability support worker I see this all the time. theres research that says a kid with ADHD will hear 20,000 more negative comments about themselves by age 10 than their neurotypical peers. I know you're talking about ocd but id bet theres an overlap science hasnt studied. that constant and consistent messaging that who we are and how we move through the world is wrong hugely shapes how we see ourselves and i believe is absolutely a breeding ground for things like rumination ocd. to not develop it under those circumstances would be a miracle unfortunately

OMFG. I ASKED MY HUSBAND THIS LAST NIGHT????? Late diagnosed ADHD at 52. OCD, anxiety, gifted ( really??) and depression diagnosed at 10. Lifetime of antidepressant therapy that made me worse. Quit the meds at 40 and found out who I was. Still susceptible to wondering if my ability to influence people now is manipulation or am I really just good at pattern recognition and can problem solve faster???

Absolutely yes! I have it and multiple therapists and psychiatrists confirmed that it stems from that childhood wound and is a pretty severe one. Once you start healing it, this really starts to dim down a lot as you start trusting yourself more. You were never wrong or being too much or mistaken in your own lived experience. It’s time to reclaim your power and sense of self to close that rumination loop of self doubt

diagnosed adhd at age 39... yes we masked hard growing up. especially the girls.. cause it was a boys thing. but i swear it was more a girls thing. because we were told we were just weird. and we hid it internally.

yes! I have thought about that too! the more I learned to listen to my gut the more my ocd thoughts kicked in and my head was like trained to tell me my gut is wrong and I need to do things against my body to fit it to this world. when I learned the difference it messed my ocd up more. I think what your saying is why this happened to me

My therapist says it’s my overwhelming desire for perfection. No one is perfect and don’t expect anyone else to be, but for some reason I hold myself to that standard. I’m obsessed with pleasing myself with perfection.

I’ve always thought that this kind of OCD is an energy issue and your brain made literally two separate voices and thought patterns. the brain version of the angel and the devil on your shoulder type internal coaching. Because we all have had a negative internal voice from time to time but the permanence and reoccurrence feels like there is actually two programs in thought processes. The positive one and the negative one.

I was diagnosed with OCD long before I was diagnosed with adhd and autism. It’s a logical explanation.

I would consider the word “self-erasure”. The concept descriptors you mentioned re. Ruminating on responsibility / accountability remind me of the effects of self-erasure esp. if/when one’s reality is denied yet it internally is still present and by it I’m referring to one’s own experience and it not being accepted or tolerated outside of oneself creating conditions of turbulence internally. It’s similar to if I tell someone I experienced a racist attack and they say it’s not possible - it denies my own reality - that cipher is dangerous

Yes. The dissonance becomes internalized when the world consistently (and mostly without malice) tells you that your experience is inaccurate. That it is personal, moral and our job to “fix” our perception. How could it not become our internal script? This is how we understand when full understanding is inaccessible
