Remember in the movie 'Walk the Line' when Johnny (Cash) says, 'It'll work out' and June goes, 'No Johnny, it won't just work out. Other ppl work it out for you and you just THINK it works out.' Religion in a nutshell.

This is a really cool way to think about the way we layer meaning on top of our experiences. Having this kind of theory of mind about other humans can be very de-centering. And liberating! It also really helps me to be more accepting of christian humans.

This is something I needed to hear so badly! Thank you for articulating this so clearly. Wow, you just blew this wide open for me. I’m so excited to understand myself better this way.

I cannot believe that here in the 21st century, people still believe in demons.

A guy who claimed he wasn't religious didn't want scary movies on his house. meanwhile, he was the demon in his house.

Yes, my dad told me ONCE he was afraid to verbally speak his fears with the TRUE BELIEF the "enemy" will hear him and use it against him. That one convo really affected me as a kid to feel anxious. Understanding my dad has anxiety now, has helped me grow away from that mentality. I feel free from my anxieties thanks to medicine and removing Christian "perfectionism" from my life.

This was my final shelf breaker! Sat in sacrament meeting and realized any of the “spirit” I had been feeling was just different emotions that I had never been taught to differentiate.

I REALLY struggle with knowing what to do when I'm sick and need help and have no one but God to ask - and then feel guilty when I feel like God DOESN'T seem to care about me but then seems to care about others. I believe in one video you named it as "prone to neuroticism" and that's so true but still, who do you call in times of great need? Who do you seek help from when life feels heavy, things are a matter or life and d3ath (I've had many surgeries so I know these worries quite a lot). Anyway, just curious...🙏🏾

I had to fight my ex-husband to be able to do yoga in my home for the same reason. He always said I was allowing demons into the home. I thought he was bat shit crazy.

Growing up in the Bible belt, I've had so many ppl say that they knew God exists because they got this sign, or felt his presence and then go to explain how they got this 'revelation' on how to solve a problem or something just worked out.

Exactly. So much of my personal experience was filtered through an evangelical lens. Everything was just confirmation of what I was told about. Now that I’m not in it, I don’t have an explanation for every experience. And that is uncomfortable place at first. When a still small voice I thought was God said “what do YOU want to do” I resisted it for a year because I thought it was idolatrous to trust myself. I still notice myself reaching out for guidance from someone. And then I get scared of who they’d be and what qualifications they have. lol. And then I have to return to myself who feels inadequate. The lack of self trust goes so deep. I’m 6 years in and I’m still unlearning. 💛

I grew up in Indiana and went to a Pentecostal church. This was a message I heard as well. No Halloween, no scary movies etc. iIt was basically inviting demons into your lives and the Holy Spirit would leave.

My parents were hard-core Missouri Synod Lutherans and they absolutely believed that someone discussing tarot cards, someone asking what your astrological sign is, someone watching scary movie about anything occult or supernatural, would poof open a portal to Satan himself.

I don't know, I see the whole demonic thing as just completely deadly for the brain that's thinking it. my roommate and close friend died a few years ago during a manic depressive episode where any police siren going by he felt it was "demonic" and there was "death in the air" and anything that he couldn't explain was a negative sign from the heavens that someone was out to get him. his religious trauma totally killed him in the end because he had made up this blanket cause for everything bad and couldn't seek actual help because of it. but that's just my personal experience

I drive home the point to my kids that the only things that move in the dark are humans and animals. Not having to be scared of spirits or monsters or gods or anything else was such a freeing feeling for me during my deconstruction.
