The reason some people say isaaq and dir are one isn’t a simple reason. What you need to understand about Somalis is there’s a lot of folklore around qabils and tribes. For example most isaaqs would tell you that sheikh isaaq is a descendant of the prophet ﷺ and he came to zaylac and married a dir woman and an Ethiopian woman and had kids and his kids being the ancestors of the isaaqs with the dir side known as habar habushid and habar magadle. Someone else might say that dir and hawiye are the sons of samaale and darood married a dir woman. But what some would also claim is that samaale is also a descendant of the prophet ﷺ. And another claim is that Darood is also a descendant of the prophet ﷺ. However through looking at haplogroups what you would see is a difference between the north and south with the north isaaq and dirs being majority T-L208 (like me an isaaq). I’ve seen many relatives on 23andMe who are dir with the same haplogroup. However comparing to other relatives who are Darood hawiye or a minority they are overwhelmingly E haplogroup with the minorities having more variation within the E haplogroup and other haplogroups
