As long as you're supporting the lgs you're playing at in some way I dont have a huge issue with proxies.

I am VERY new to MTG (edh) and am appalled at the price of cards. Even building a moderate deck with "staples" to start out will run you hundreds of dollars minimum. Proxy and online building (import to Tabletop Simulator) are the only ways to be accessible to get started and find out if you even like the hobby without committing a financial war crime. Yet I see the same opinion over and over (I'm fine with proxies) but then still, it feels like MTG players don't actually like proxies because they start putting weird restrictions on it as if they can't themselves proxy the same cards. Power level is all anyone should be caring about, so long as the proxy deck is the same bracket as the pod's expectations then it should be fine. It just feels like a superiority complex: "I only play cards I ACTUALLY own and have been collecting for 20 years. You can't proxy that Roaming Throne" (or build it online unless you own it).

It always boils down to “What and Why” you have a Proxy. Is that Commander usually $100+? Proxy it. Is it a Color Staple that’s expensive like the Black Tutors, Green Doublers, or Blue Counters that are $70 each? Proxy it. Are you Proxy’ing Mox Opals, Base Dual Lands, and Chains of Mephistopheles type stuff? Knock it off.

I used to be pretty against proxies, mostly doomsaying that people would proxy Power 9 or whatever. Then Secret Lairs came out and The Fourteenth Doctor is now $100. In a world where cards probably won't ever get reprinted, who cares if a card is "real" or not anymore?

I don’t really care about proxy’s, but anecdotally the only time I ever run into problems is people using them to make decks that are way way too powerful for casual LGS play. I think a certain amount of cost helps keep things in check, on a conceptual level at least. I know that creates its own problems. There is definitely a middle ground between “all proxy’s bad” and “oops all proxy’s”

EXCLUDING CEDH in casual formats you are almost always a worse player if you rely on proxies because typically what happens is they lose games they don't know why and instead of learning they blame the budgets of the deck so they proxy a bunch of generically good cards so they might win a tiny bit more but the reality is they don't know how why when to use X cards
