Seven people, including two serving police officers, have died after a Volkswagen Passat travelling the wrong way along the A66 collided head-on with a marked police vehicle near Middlesbrough following a pursuit. The collision happened at around 3.40am on Saturday in South Bank, Teesside. The police vehicle, carrying two officers, was travelling in the correct direction when it was struck by the Passat. All seven people involved in the collision were pronounced dead at the scene. The Independent Office for Police Conduct said officers had earlier spotted a suspicious vehicle and a pursuit began before the car travelled onto the A66 and collided with the police vehicle. The watchdog has launched an independent investigation following a mandatory referral from Cleveland Police. Residents around a mile from the crash described being woken by vehicles travelling at high speed with police lights and sirens shortly before the collision. Cleveland Police Chief Constable Victoria Fuller said the deaths would be felt “across Cleveland, within our communities and throughout the entire policing family”, adding that specialist support was being provided to all the families involved. North East Ambulance Service deployed 14 resources, including ambulance crews, a specialist paramedic, its Hazardous Area Response Team and a doctor from the Great North Air Ambulance Service. The A66 remains closed in both directions between Normanby Road and Church Lane while the investigation continues. #A66 #Middlesbrough
