🎅❄️Pagan Santa❄️🎅 We have all grown up with the image of Father Christmas (or St Nic as he is otherwise known) The jolly red & white clad figure who rides a sleigh drawn by reindeer handing our presents, but did you know that he most likely originates from various pagan winter deities? With the Victorians reviving most Christmas traditions, most people began to assume that Father Christmas is a more modern invention, possibly arriving from the late medieval period. This is because the name Father Christmas is first mentioned around the 15th century, and later on he was a main figure in mummers plays and poems. However, folklorists, historians and enthusiats alike have researched more ancient pagan deities in depth and have drawn the conclusion that Father Christmas's roots most likely come from mythologies and beliefs that go back many thousands of years. In Britain and Ireland (and possibly other European countries) their deity appeared as an old man with a white beard in a green cloak, adorned in Holly and Ivy. This personification both relates the Holly King and the coming of spring. For the Norse, their deity was Odin. The most likely contenAnother old (ish) man with a white beard, who around Yuletide leads the Wild Hunt - A ghostly hunting party in the night sky. Children were also said to leave food in their boots to feed Sleipnir, Odins horse which pulled his sleigh through the sky during the hunt. Odin would sometimes even leave gifts in return! And in other cultures, such as Siberian pagan tribes, their deity was often known as Father Winter and wore red & white cloaks and clothes. This famous red and white colour was attributed to the colours of the amanita mushroom, a psychedelic mushroom which was consumed by pagan cultures during the winter. . . . . #midwinter #solstice #wintersolstice #winterdeity #doing
