@spaceplanethq: Twelve years into Paul Atreides' reign, the hero of Dune counts what his victory cost: 61 billion dead in the holy war his Fremen legions fought in his name, 90 planets sterilized, the followers of 40 religions wiped out. He makes Stilgar study footage of Earth's old conquerors, so his oldest friend can see where the Emperor of the Known Universe ranks beside them. Frank Herbert published Dune Messiah in 1969, four years after Dune, and he wrote it to take his own hero apart. Readers had come out of the first novel loving Paul Muad'Dib, and Herbert spent the sequel showing them what a messiah costs the people who follow him. Paul rules an empire he cannot steer, worshipped by legions who answer to his religion instead of to him. The Tleilaxu and the Spacing Guild move against him, and inside his own household Princess Irulan, his wife by treaty, has spent years lacing the food of Chani, the Fremen woman he loves. His prescience should see all of it coming, and the conspirators have thought about that too. Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part Three adapts Dune Messiah and opens on December 18, 2026, with Timothée Chalamet returning as Paul, Zendaya as Chani, Florence Pugh as Irulan, Anya Taylor-Joy as Alia and Robert Pattinson joining as the Face Dancer Scytale. #dune #dunemessiah #frankherbert #scifi #BookTok

Frank Herbert never meant to write Messiah the way it was. He only did it because of the way people responded to the original Dune, so he purposely destroyed Paul Atreides

Didn’t Paul give up on chani because he knew she would die giving birth to 1 child. Believing there was nothing he could do to change the outcome, all the futures he seen chani dead so he gave up trying and just embraced her death. Only to find out she gave birth to twins, something Paul didn’t see. Knowing this, that something changed and his visions aren’t the absolute truth is what crushed him, thinking something actually could have saved chani if he kept trying

The import thing to understand is the 61 Billion dead is the best of all possible outcomes. If Paul had done anything else besides become emperor it would have been much worse.

I think Dune is a good example of great world building, and absolutely cliche, dogshit plot

He chose this path in the very beginning, shunning the golden path because Paul deemed the personal sacrifice too high; his son Leto then sees the same path but doesn’t have the emotional connection of love that Paul had in Chani, so Leto makes the decision that the sacrifices are worth it and follows the golden path

Yeah, all that and Paul was still a coward, he knew the only way to save her humanity from complete extinction was the golden path, and he allowed his blindness to give him an out, forcing his son to take it up as God emperor. 😳

I always thought it was a cowardly choice to make 61 billion deaths the “good outcome”. It strips all the nuance from Paul in favor of maintaining his position as the protagonist

I know everybody has their preferences but the Dune sequels are my litmus test for whether I will value someone's literary recommendations or not. I'm not saying saying they're bad, but if someone honestly enjoyed reading them, then I know we fundamentally enjoy different types of books.

This is an important set of books from a 60s sci-fi author. It has few competitive contemporaries that people even read any more. The dept these novels is not available in today's writing. I will caution however that his son wrote some after and They are shit.

loved the books when I read them all as a teenager. although the first is my all time favorite and it ranked even above Lotr for me. im so happy we get a good trilogy now. similar to how Lotr was finally done right.

Hayt doesn’t really say outright he’s sent to destroy him, him and Paul have a lengthy conversation about his intentions and what’s currently going on but Alia is watching over them both while they speak

But there is also no real confirmation of Paul’s death in the desert right, he could be the watcher, the keeper, the unknown
