“Ama Masarai.” I am Masalit. Three simple words. A powerful declaration of identity. The Masalit are one of Sudan’s many Indigenous communities, with a rich history rooted in Darfur. Their language, traditions, and culture have been preserved through generations, even in the face of displacement, conflict, and immense hardship. Today, the Masalit continue to demonstrate extraordinary resilience while keeping their heritage alive. Sudan is home to more than 500 tribes and over 114 Indigenous languages. Each tribe contributes to the story of our nation, and each deserves to have its culture celebrated and preserved. Too often, tribal identity is misunderstood as something that divides us. But our tribes are not what separate us, they are what make Sudan so beautifully diverse. Saying “Ama Masarai” doesn’t make someone any less Sudanese. It honors where they come from while embracing who they are. You can be proudly Masalit and proudly Sudanese at the same time. This series is about celebrating the incredible diversity of Sudan, one tribe, one language, and one story at a time.
