Here's exactly how it works. Amex has a 30% transfer bonus to British Airways, and that's how your points reach Japan Airlines. Through September 27, 1,000 Amex Membership Rewards points transfer to British Airways as 1,300 Avios. Avios is the currency British Airways runs on. Normally it's 1:1. Avios matter here because British Airways prices partner awards by distance band, not by cash fare. JAL is a oneworld partner. So JAL first class books at a fixed Avios price no matter what the ticket is selling for. Chicago to Tokyo in JAL first is 136,500 Avios one way. That Avios price doesn't move. What the bonus changes is how many Amex points it takes to get there. ✅ The math: $16,000 cash fare 136,500 Avios one way 136,500 Amex points without the bonus 105,000 Amex points with it Around $500 in taxes and carrier charges Just under 15 cents per Amex point West coast departures price lower.
