The tensions were sparked after a "Christian Crusader March" was organized at the Dearborn City Council meeting. The Christian rally was met with a sizable radical Islamist crowd. Radical elements from both sides clashed outside the building. The whole crowd totaled 2,000 people. The right-wing crowd chanted, "This is America, not Iran."

We in the Middle East, especially in Iraq, have lived for generations alongside people of different religions. Iraq is home to Christians, Yazidis, Mandaeans, Muslims, and others. We have churches, mosques, and places of worship, and we are able to live together with love and mutual respect despite our differences. So why is there so much hatred toward Muslims? Why don’t you respect our beliefs and religion in the same way that we respect your beliefs and religion? And why are there attempts to exclude Muslims from American society? We believe that everyone has the right to practice their religion freely and to be treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their faith or beliefs. Differences in religion and beliefs do not mean that we should hate one another; rather, we should learn to live together peacefully and respect one another.
