For a generation of women, it was the book that explained why their lives felt so constrained. She wasn't some cultural conservative defending rape - she was the intellectual godmother of British feminism. Which is exactly what made this interview so radioactive. Her position: the legal system was so adversarial, so built around masculine ideas of evidence and consent, that it was actively failing the women it claimed to protect. Getting a rape conviction required proving a crime that by its nature leaves no witnesses and rarely leaves evidence. Most cases ended in he said, she said - and juries consistently believed the man. She references the Belfast Four: four men, including Ulster rugby internationals, accused of gang rape after a party in 1994. They were acquitted. Women's groups were devastated. Greer's argument: the system was never going to convict them. The clip ends on something that rarely gets said: that non-consensual sex doesn't just harm individual women. It erodes intimacy itself.
