ARMYs and K-pop fans constantly brag about BTS being feminists, humanitarians, progressive, advocates for youth, and globally influential as reasons they’re special, different, and worthy of respect. Their self-love, anti-violence and humanitarian messaging has been a huge part of their music and public image for years. But when those same values become inconvenient, suddenly it’s “they didn’t know,” “who cares,” “it’s just music,” or “it’s not that deep.” You can’t use their values as evidence of why they’re exceptional, downplay those same values when their actions don’t align with them, and then act like we’re crazy for holding them to the standards they set for themselves.
