As backlash against the rapidly expanding surveillance network continues to grow. Supporters say the cameras help law enforcement locate stolen vehicles, find missing people, and assist with investigations. Critics, however, have raised concerns about privacy, mass surveillance, data sharing, and cases where the system has allegedly been misused. Flock operates a network of more than 120,000 cameras nationwide, and the controversy surrounding that network has now led to vandalism incidents in communities across the country. The reasons people give for damaging the cameras vary, but opposition is largely centered around privacy and surveillance concerns. Some activists believe the cameras allow law enforcement and other agencies to track people's movements without sufficient oversight. At the same time, destroying or tampering with the cameras can lead to serious criminal charges, including criminal mischief, vandalism, theft, destruction of public safety equipment, and other charges depending on the circumstances and state law. Recent reporting has documented at least 33 confirmed vandalism incidents across 23 states, while some individual cities have reported dozens of incidents on their own. Several recent arrests highlight how widespread the backlash has become. In Alabama, Vincent Harrington was accused of damaging 4 Flock cameras before his arrest. In Florida, 18-year-old Jaden Brooks was arrested after investigators said he cut down 3 cameras in Port Orange and New Smyrna Beach. According to his arrest affidavit, Brooks admitted he damaged the cameras because he disagreed with their purpose. He was charged with 3 counts of criminal mischief. In Kentucky, Christopher Embry was arrested after investigators allegedly found 5 damaged Flock cameras at his residence, with authorities estimating thousands of dollars in damage. In West Virginia, Wesley Jackson was charged in connection with the destruction or theft of 4 cameras around Morgantown and faces charges including damage, destruction, or theft of emergency responder equipment and conspiracy. In Ohio, Cody Morelock was accused of removing bolts securing a Flock camera system, bringing down the camera, solar panel, and support pole before the equipment was damaged. In Michigan, Spencer Anderson was arrested after allegedly smashing 3 Flock cameras. And in June, Rever Blair was accused of disabling 8 Flock cameras across North Florida and Georgia. Whether someone sees Flock cameras as a useful investigative tool or an expanding surveillance system with too little oversight, the public backlash is clearly growing.
