I have been using AI the last 24 months...can't remember last time I wrote code myself. feels like I am getting paid to do nothing

As a swe in big tech, this may be the single worst piece of advice I have ever heard 😂

The issue is sometimes it feels like you will be left behind if you’re not leveraging this technology tht everyone else is using

people will unironically look you in the face and tell you if you don’t learn how to write a couple md files and prompt you will be “left behind”. i’m good off that, i’d rather focus on building expertise instead, i rarely use AI and i’m ahead of most of my peers anyway

I fear that none of the people who see this will take your advice. it's great advice! vibe coders can't listen to it.

Not knowing the codebase worsens my impostor syndrome. I need to know every line AI changed or else I can’t function lol

I had an internship with a bank, and was given technology I've never worked with, and struggled with it and studied it, and went slow and steady with the process, then another intern also new to that technology joined a week from me, opened every ai in existence, fed all the bank data to it, had the ai write everything, and within a week he was finished with the app that should've taken a month, by purely copying and pasting. He was celebrated and told he's smart. I was left behind and told I should be more like him and looked down upon for being too slow while never having fed any bank data to the ai, and gone slowly and wrote code that although worked, would've taken a month to finish. All I did with my pride was get left behind and looked down upon

We aren't in the past, been in the field for 6 years, this won't matter and will matter even less in a few years. Traditional SE is DEAD we are in different times. Nobody is writing code manually, those who claim they due are liars. You'd write code manually yet people ship secure and user-ready apps in a few days or weeks. Times are changing whether people want to accept it or not.

i could be totally wrong here but i don’t think ai is meant for software devs or anyone who cares about “protecting their skills” in terms of coding or finding a job. it’s meant to speed up the creation of individual projects and help progress creativity that otherwise would take months-years to develop. i don’t believe ai will or should ever be integrated into enterprise at a massive scale, too many tokens/vulnerabilities; it should only help debugging bc that’s what it excels at when given correct context. i’ve built a 2.5d project zomboid-like game in only 2 months, and while it’s nowhere near polished or ready to ship, it’s amazing to see claude create different tooling scripts for certain implementations and run a/b testing for debugging.

He’s not wrong! You need to understand before you build.

I have been programming for 5 years. No school degree. About 10 unfinished projects. I really postponed using ai for a long time. I have a deep understanding of my codebase. Then I took a 20$ Claude code subscription. I created about 20 skills, then now, I have Claude code fill in the gap that I never thought about. I write my tests, and ask him to implement some spec, and force it to make sure that my written tests pass.

100%, using AI to build should be reserved for the senior engineers who completely understand end to end software production. Trust me it only took me one build with claude code to realize it wasn’t meant for me, Unless im just trying to become a prompter, but as an early career swe its more harmful than good, if not now in the near future you will just become a prompter and unable to produce code without AI.

What books would you recommend to learn programming? I don’t just mean like learning syntax but going from nothing to a finished product.

All your teammates are using AI, if you dont you will immediately fall behind and probably be let go soon after. That's the unfortunate state of the industry right now.

if you're on a job, you're required to move faster than usual because there's AI, there's rarely anytime again, a video call feature that would have taken me 1 to 2 weeks was done on a good day I had to implement it in 4 days, now I had already done a video call feature pre AI, in short I wrote code pre AI so I have in depth knowledge but I can't act like I don't know that with more dependency on AI I'll forget things

that's true, Just learn the basics and solve problems, then when you use ai you will understand what will give you rather than copy paste.

I want to agree with you, but other seniors have told me that if I can't take a business problem and make a spec to be handed to some agents and get that product live in a week, then my name wasn't worth remembering.
Everyone made it pretty clear that if they are evaluating my code then something already went dramatically wrong, and getting more than a small handful of comments on a PR is equivalent to a soft PIP.

Great advise, when you are in college you don’t have to worry about deadlines, performance review and staff like this, so you may spend as much time as you need to write code by hand, vibecoded SaaS application will not guarantee you an offer, but good fundamentals will(in proper environment)
