Dermatologist Truths: What’s Worth It vs. What’s Not — Korean Skincare Edition Gel creams were popular in Korea long before they became trendy in the U.S. I love this gel cream from Dr. G. It’s lightweight and contains centella and niacinamide to help soothe the skin. It’s a great option for acne-prone or easily irritated skin. There are so many great skin barrier creams in Korean skincare, and this one from Dr. Althea is one of my favorites. Soothing guaiazulene helps reinforce the skin barrier, and it contains 7 types of hyaluronic acid plus ceramides for long-lasting hydration. It’s great for quickly calming irritated skin — I especially love using it overnight. Collagen is a hotly debated skincare ingredient. The collagen molecule is usually too large to penetrate the skin effectively as an anti-aging ingredient. Hydrolyzed collagen can be smaller in molecular size, but overall collagen works best as a humectant to hydrate and moisturize the skin rather than truly boost collagen production. PDRN is another trending ingredient in Korean skincare. However, plant-derived PDRN doesn’t have much supporting data. Salmon-derived PDRN is the form that’s been studied the most. In many products, the other ingredients may be doing most of the work for hydration and skin repair, so overall I think it’s a bit overhyped. For brightening, I prefer serums that combine multiple brightening ingredients. This one from Cellimax is a great option with ingredients like tranexamic acid, niacinamide, and Melazero to help even skin tone and target hyperpigmentation. One Korean eye patch I do like is from Goodal (not the exact one I’m using in the video). It contains vitamin C and glutathione to help brighten the under-eye area, especially if you have darkening or hyperpigmentation. The patch material is also very hydrating and comfortable on the skin. #drheejink #drkohskincare #koreanskincareproducts
