![WE'VE MISUNDERSTOOD WORSHIP [51:56] We’ve misunderstood worship. Allah ﷻsays: وَمَا خَلَقْتُ ٱلْجِنَّ وَٱلْإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ “I did not create jinn and mankind except to worship Me.” (Surah adh-Dhāriyāt, 51:56) Wa mā khalaqtu al-jinna wa al-insa illā liyaʿbudūn. That’s it. The reason for your creation — in one word: Worship. But here’s the dilemma. You eat. You sleep. You work. You study. You scroll this screen. You raise children. You brush your teeth. You don’t spend 24 hours on a prayer mat. You can’t. Even the Prophet ﷺdidn’t. He ﷺsaid: “I fast — and I break my fast. I pray — and I sleep. And I marry women.” So how does that fit? Either this verse is asking the impossible — Or we’ve misunderstood what ʿibādahreally means. Worship isn’t a ritual box. It’s a state of the soul. One day, a man passed by the Prophet ﷺ — strong, active, heading to work. The companions said, “If only he was doing that in the path of Allah ﷻ!” But the Prophet ﷺreplied: “If he’s striving for his children — he is in the path of Allah ﷻ. For his parents — in the path of Allah ﷻ. To stay self-sufficient — in the path of Allah ﷻ. But if to show off — then he is in the path of Shayṭān.” The Prophet ﷺwas reframing everything: With the right intention, all of life can become worship greater than traditional “worship”. And with the wrong attitude, everything is corrupted. It’s all about mindset! Let me give you an example. When I say charity, what comes to mind? Feeding the poor? Building a well? But the Prophet ﷺsaid: “The charity with the greatest reward is the one you spend on your family.” (Reported by al-Bukhārī and Muslim) The rent you pay. The food you cook. That too… is worship. Now flip it. What if you do pray — five times a day — are you now fulfilling your purpose? If so, why does Allah ﷻ say: فَوَيْلٌۭ لِّلْمُصَلِّينَ “Woe to those who pray…” ٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ عَن صَلَاتِهِمْ سَاهُونَ “Those who are heedless of their prayer.” (Surah al-Māʿūn, 107:4–5) They pray… But it doesn’t touch their hearts. It doesn’t change how they treat others. It doesn’t prevent harm. Prayer shouldn’t stay on the prayer mat. If it doesn’t transform you — you’re in trouble. So what is worship? Worship is about presence. To know the Names of Allah ﷻ— And reflect them. To show mercy because He is Ar-Raḥmān. To act justly because He is Al-ʿAdl. To forgive, because He is Al-Ghafūr. You are His khalīfah. His ambassador. And you worship Him by fulfilling that purpose. That… is worship. This… is purpose.
