Karmelo Anthony's request for a new trial has officially been denied. After an explosive two-day hearing examining the “gentleman's agreement,” Karmelo's decision not to testify, courtroom restrictions and other issues raised by his defense, Judge Michael Chitty rejected the motion Saturday. Karmelo's murder conviction and 35-year sentence therefore remain in effect. But Karmelo's legal options have not been exhausted. His case now proceeds to the Texas Fifth Court of Appeals in Dallas, where his conviction can continue to be challenged. For those of us who believe Karmelo was railroaded and deserved a fair opportunity to present his self-defense case, today is a setback – not the end.
