@artvangarde: Open the Door is a site-specific installation by Australian artist Brigita Ozolins, created inside the former Ladies Cottage at Willow Court, Tasmania. Using more than sixty suspended mirrors, handwritten chalk texts and a haunting soundscape created with composer Dean Stevenson, the installation confronts the building’s history as a place of psychiatric confinement for women. Built in 1868, the Cottage housed women diagnosed under labels including hysteria, melancholia, epilepsy and even “disobedience” or “impure thoughts.” The title comes from a disturbing historical detail: admission required only two signatures, while release required eight. #artist #niche #art #weird #avantgarde
