As a parent to 5 (oldest is 12) I’ve never understood WHY parents or schools are doing this. Kids that grow up on reading and books and outside and minimal screens (we pretty much only do documentaries and family movies - always together as a social event, only personal screens they own are a kindle reader!) are WAY better behaved and much more enjoyable to be around. We kicked up our screen use during Covid for 2 months and it was MISERY. Bored overstimulated kids running around screaming, unregulated, whiny. I.e. 95% of the kids my kids went to school with (before we switched to low screen IB school). It took us 6 months to get completely back to normal. Literally hated being a parent to screen kids, could not stand it, regretted every life choice 😂 But Now I have 5 reading/outdoorsy kids who are playful, imaginative, emotionally regulated (well at least for their ages haha), calm, funny, clever, respectful… And importantly happy kids. Because kids who are that overstimulated are simply not happy, it’s like watching an adult in mania - they might be grinning but they’re not okay!

My 6 year old is reading at a 3rd grade level because I’ve been reading to her EVERY SINGLE NIGHT since she was a baby. Parents need to do better for the sake of their children.

After observing kids in school the issue is technology. Yes it is a wonderful thing, but children are introduced to it too early. Back to tech free for the first few years. Im an older millennial, our school didn’t introduce computers until 4th grade. I know we are in a world that is all tech but a tech free zone is needed. Early tech skills are already being done at home.

Parents: please read to your kids. Even if you can’t read yourself- talk about the scenarios in the picture book and have them explain what they see or should see 😭

I dropped my English education major recently, three years in. i couldn't handle it. most teachers ive mentored or worked with have given up, and I can't blame them. we need to start holding kids back and remove technology from classrooms at this point
