My dad has always let me know how disappointing I am due to my autism & mental health issues. He blames it all on my “choices.” My autism is more than likely due to him being in his mid-40s when I was conceived, but he won’t hear any of it. We don’t speak.

I know my parents resent me for who I am and my disability and I was always aware of it to varying levels. And it has led to some really fucked up situations. And non disabled people (including healthcare providers) will handwave that away as if it's not true. I don't think people realize how common this is (cause they don't want to probably). people want to comfort themselves more then ensure the safety of the child. idk how to explain it better.

my mom was a teen mom in the 2000s in a very religious area. she refused to have us tested for disabilities because it was treated as her being more of a failure. She got better as we goy older buy still it hurt.... that my mom saw us being different as a failure.

Can confirm. My dad absolutely hated me because of how I reflected on him. That’s why, from my POV, my neurotypical half sister had a completely different dad than I did even though we had the same dad.

I don’t think the issue is parents view their children as an extension of themselves. In my opinion, the issue is raising disabled children is HARD, harder than raising non-disabled children. And the majority of people have no concept of the life-altering reality of disability or having a disabled child until it happens to them.

I have two kids with PANDAS. A lot of these parents are on the internet saying things that their children do that they shouldn't be saying because it's putting them at risk. But also with this disease specifically there's a lot of us who have CPS called on us because people think that when our children are in a flare it's because we're just bad parents. Because they don't understand the nature of the disease.

There was one time I was walking in a TJ Maxx and an elderly woman was absolutely verbally abusing what seem to be either her granddaughter or her daughter (woman looked to be an adult) who was disabled. And no one did anything about it. No one said anything to her. This happens so often.

Ah! This makes a lot of sense. So, the real question is how can we provide real support to caregivers in our lives to assuage that resentment and protect the disabled in their care? Hmmm 🤔

I’m torn when it feels exploitative to the disabled person or child that cannot consent or have not been asked for consent to share. But also the ones sharing on social media and growing followings usually are the more privileged families, but the ones struggling financially for the bare minimum health care they can yell and scream to try and get.

I get blamed for my disability (Thanks to CDC PSAs.) I definitely think this is true. This accountability for disability and chronic illness is just so weird. Especially in a world where people have recently decided to stop vaccinating and masking to protect everyone's health.
