Trump would barely throw paper towels at the residents of Gary. This is reminiscent of New Orleans/Hurricane Katrina & its deplorable and unacceptable. We truly need to be a lot more angry, a lot more organized, and a lot more active.

Exactly. Saying race shaped this response does not require proving that every official involved is personally racist. It means recognizing how historical conditioning influences whose suffering is noticed, believed and treated as urgent. After Dr. King’s assassination, Jane Elliott’s 1968 Blue Eyes/Brown Eyes exercise showed how quickly all-white third graders adopted an arbitrary hierarchy and began treating classmates differently. Conditioning does not disappear simply because segregation and slavery are described as history. Gary is 76.2% Black, nearly one-third of its residents live in poverty, and families were left without a basic necessity for nearly two weeks and 30k are still without power. Social media creators forced national visibility after institutions failed to create urgency. Race and class are not distractions from this story—they are part of the story. Oh and let me say I was raised in Gary and currently live 15 minutes away in Merrillville

There’s a documentary about Hurricane Katrina where a Black man states when all the Black people were on the rooftops trying to wave down RESCUE helicopters, they did NOT get rescued. He realized what was happening, told the Black people to go inside, and asked only WHITE people to go to the rooftop, they were IMMEDIATELY rescued. The bias is BLATANT!
