The problem with hell as a place of suffering is that a God cannot be all loving OR just, and simultaneously be okay with his children suffering for eternity for mistakes made during an 80 year timeframe.

I interpret Hell as a solution to evil rather than a place for it. Peace does not have a space to keep evil, it removes it entirely, thus restoring peace. Only evil has moments of mercy, peace doesn’t know what mercy is.

I studied in a privet Adventist of the 7th Day school and the premise was that you don’t go to hell or heaven. You stop existing until the second return of Christ when everyone will be judged. Dead people will resurrect and will be on trial as well.

also if I remember correctly theres a huge work of scholarship called “the doctrine of Apokatastasis” by Ilaria Ramelli that argued that Universalism was actually the most popular and mainstream view until Augustine wrote about eternal hell, with people like Origen of Alexandria, St. Issac the Syrian, and St. Gregory of Nyssa holding to some form of it.

The issue with that and how it still doesn’t line up with a loving god… it’s still an infinite punishment for temporary sins he supposedly died on a cross to forgive. Is it less heinous? Sure. Is fundamentally more just? No.

My deconstruction took 10 years with twists and turns and me diving deeper into Christianity, trying to hold on. I believed in annihilation theory for years bc of a sermon by Dr Greg Boyd. I think believing that actually kept me a Christian longer… I believed it so long that I have forgotten just how many people I know STILL believe - and are OKAY with - ETERNAL TORTURE. 😳😳😳
